Palais de Glace. 1893.
“Chéret executed several posters for this popular establishment, always with a delightful young woman in the spotlight, accompanied by a shadowy figure of a gentleman in the background. What we learn from all the designs is that women were able to enjoy indoor skating in full street clothes, including elaborate hats, coats and capes” (Gold, p. 90). In one of the more complex images of the artist’s series for this rink, Chéret echoes the rhythmic lines of the skater’s boa and coat in the shadowed figures behind her.
