“Shufflin’ Sam From Alabam’. ca. 1927.
“Everything New But The Name” might be something of a promotional overstatement, but this “2nd Annual Tour” of “Shufflin’ Sam from Alabam’” undoubtedly delivered the minstrel goods that audiences of the time were hankerin’ for. Though the plot specifics of any of the incarnations of “Shufflin’ Sam” are no longer available, it’s immediately clear from the graphic narration that the show is peppered with elements left over from minstrelsy despite the fact that the diversion was performed by “The World’s Greatest Colored Musical Comedy” troupe–a bumpkin living beyond his means and the women who prod him along down the road to ruin. However, if one takes race out of the equation, it looks like your standard fish-out-of-water story. When will poor Sam ever learn?
