Ambassadeurs/Tous les Soirs. ca. 1886.
An impish minstrel pulls picture cards from a trunk that bear the names of the principal artists performing at the Ambassadeur café-concert, tossing them to the outstretched hands of an unseen, yet undoubtedly clamoring crowd. A quartet of comely chorines and a demonically self-assured clown round out the proceedings. A rather effective manner of advertising the depth of a venue’s entertainment pool, especially seeing as the talent trunk doesn’t even appear close to being empty.
