L’Excelsior/Papier à Cigarettes. 1883.
Simply stated, this must’ve been one hell of a rolling paper. The manufacturers are so confident that they have a superior product that they don’t even bother to show a single person enjoying a smoldering Excelsior cigarette. They do mention that “Anyone with taste renounces all other” brands on the market. Instead, courtesy of an uncredited hand, they call upon two beautiful women–one white, one black, one clothed, one practically nude–to pull the curtain back to reveal a spectacle of epic proportions. The implication is clear: one puff of an Excelsior-rolled smoke and you’ll feel as if a pageant for the ages is thundering across your taste buds. And the anti-tobacco crusaders thought Joe Camel was bad. That poor dromedary doesn’t stand a chance when compared to the carnival atmosphere of Excelsior!
