Vélodrome Buffalo. 1893.
Beginning in 1893, the Vélodrome Buffalo came under the direction of Tristan Bernard, who reputedly introduced the bell to signal a race’s final lap. It’s there that Toulouse-Lautrec became a frequent visitor and sketched several prints, as well as two of his posters, the Cycle Michael (see Lot 8) and the Chaine Simpson. This competition-focused poster was created to promote the opening of the venue, its name deriving from Buffalo Bill Cody whose Wild West show had played on the grounds just prior to the velodrome’s construction. This is considered the first bicycle racing poster.
