Lautrec’s improper drawing of the chain resulted in this design being rejected. Therefore, he did the only sensible thing and ran off 200 copies at his own cost for the amusement of his friends and collectors. The cyclist is the British champion Jimmy Michael - the toothpick in his mouth was his trademark. The man with the stopwatch is the sports correspondent Frantz Reichel. Meanwhile, bending over the bag in the background is Michael’s coach, Choppy Warburton. The scene is the Buffalo track in Neuilly and was only printed in a olive-green monochrome. This copy is hand-signed.

Lautrec’s friend Paul Leclerq has left us a vivid description of this little print, which appeared in June of 1895 as the illustration to a report by Tristan Bernard in La Revue Franco-Américaine: “The print shows the celebrated racing cyclist Arthur ‘The American Flyer’ Zimmerman [who had been in France since May of 1893] wearing his jersey, leaning on his bicycle. Through this lively image I can see Lautrec, armed with his litho chalk, bending over the stone, and I can still hear him eulogizing on the benefits of sports training, with the short, vivid and trenchant expressions which he used to such effect” (Paul Leclerq, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Zurich 1958, p. 13).
