Pneu Michelin. 1895.
A fine example of how classical allegories influenced 20th century advertising. In posters like this, the women, in everything from what they hold to what they wear, are meant to represent the virtues of a given product. Here, Michelin sees itself not only as more sensual, brazen, and adventuresome than its sallow, old-fashioned counterpart, but with the addition of the peacock feather -- a frequently-used Christian symbol -- it declares its indestructibility against all obstacles. Hence, the slogan at the bottom: the only brand which adapts itself to the wheel of fortune.
