The Wright Brothers / Dayton, Ohio. 1909.
On the morning of December 17, 1903, Orville & Wilbur Wright set off to change the course of history by taking to the skies in the first controlled flight by a human in a motorized aircraft. It was only on their fourteenth attempt that Wilbur, strapped face down to the latticework of wood struts, wire, and cotton, managed to maintain an altitude of fifteen feet for one-tenth of a mile before crash landing after 59 seconds. Thus began the brothers’ lifetime dedication to the science of aviation. In 1908, after a year of record breaking flights both at home and abroad, the US Government accepted the Wright machine for army use, and the brothers established the Wright Company in Dayton. This poster uses the hometown heroes alongside a breathtaking view of their biplane soaring over the countryside to promote their appearance at a local air show. This lot also includes the original, complete program from the day’s events.
