Cycles Gladiator. ca. 1895.
Arguably the most famous of all bicycle posters, this image of a redheaded sylph being propelled through the sky by the unparalleled speed of her Gladiator cycle appears on everything in contemporary culture from wine labels to our company’s blog. And yet the design itself remains uncredited, despite the presence of the faint initials L.W. in the lower right corner. A lithographic masterpiece.

Cycles Hirondelle. ca. 1899.
Cycles Hirondelle was produced by Manufrance (short for Manufacture Française d’Armes, written at the top of the image), a company most noted for its mail order service. This particular brand of bike was the country’s first Modern cycle, used primarily by policemen in Paris and considered to be more of a ‘working’ bicycle than a leisure vehicle.

An amusing bit of advertising exaggeration, visually claiming that Dutheil bicycles are so fast and smooth, they can outride a racehorse. Set against the nationalistic blue, white, and red of France, there is also a touch of patriotism for this Parisian brand. Noted above, one can choose from a variety of detachable parts to customize your bike.

Moto Rêve. 1913.
Literally translating as “Dreambike,” Moto-Rêve moved into its first location in 1905, just down the road in Geneva from the more famous Motosaccoche firm. Its product was quite simple: the brand merely strapped a V-twin engine onto a standard bicycle frame, creating a motorized bike. Here, Codognato emphasizes the ease with which one can ride such a contraption; a young child merrily whizzing down the road, legs akimbo as he no longer needs to peddle.

Automobiles et Cycles Clément. 1903.
On an outlook point far above the twinkling lights of Paris, two young ladies with their bikes come upon a sporty gentleman in his automobile of the same make. Two lanterns carried by the ladies help to light up the scene, but it’s the fireworks erupting against the dark blue sky that provides a machine-age geyser of illumination to the vehicles’ logo.

Motobécane. .
Geo Ham created one other design for Motobecane (see PAI-XXXIII, 367), which diverges so much from his later, more famous style that it’s difficult to believe they are done by the same hand. This poster acts as a bridge between the two styles, still showcasing the tight lines and graphic matter-of-factness of his earlier work but hinting at the emphasis on speed and excitement that would dominate the rest of his oeuvre.
