Barnum and Bailey/Greatest Show on Earth. 1897.
Various portrait bills for Barnum & Bailey appeared throughout the course of their circus’ lifetime, but this is one of the first. As with all such portraits, the were meant to instill confidence in the circus by showing respectable individuals at the helm. And these two men worked as the ultimate circus team: Bailey was the supreme circus operator, a former billposter who worked quietly and efficiently behind the scenes to manage the myriad of details; Barnum was the famous partner, somewhat impractical, always flamboyant.
