Achille Philion / An Attraction Without a Parallel. 1899.
Similar in style to an act made famous by La Roche (see Lot 2), Achille Philion was hired by the Ringling Brothers when they were just a small-town circus. He went on to perform for Forepaugh & Sells, and that troupe’s name usually appears at the top of this design. Here, it has been changed to simply “An Attraction Without Parallel.” This French daredevil “added a stunning touch to his Spiraling Ascension on a Rolling Globe act. When he reached the top of the ramp, his apparatus was engulfed in pyrotechnics, earning the description on the poster” (Circus/Taschen, p. 619).
