Bruant. .
A truly strange design promoting the popular cabaret performer Aristide Bruant. Best known as a figure in many posters by Toulouse-Lautrec, this particular image does not announce a specific show, but rather references the brutal imagery appearing in his chansons. In particular, the visual cues here may be referencing one of Bruant’s most famous numbers, “A la Villette.” In it, a girl recounts how her lover was imprisoned for robbery, and ultimately sent to the guillotine.
