Thatcher, Primrose & West’s Minstrels. ca. 1882.
Before taking on George Thatcher as a partner, Primrose & West had gained popularity by being one of the few American shows to offer the British-style version of minstrel entertainment, favoring the placement of blackfaced actors in high-society roles and situations rather than featuring lowbrow comedy and African spirituals. Here, the three owners are shown winning a “race” against other minstrel troupes.
