Günther Wagner / Pelikan Farben. 1898.
"The Color Expert," the text attests; Günther Wagner was one of the leading ink-and-oil paint manufacturers in turn-of-the-century Germany. According to The Poster, Müller-Dachau posters for Wagner were printed “from half-tone process blocks, probably the largest blocks ever made. The new method . . . is far more costly than by lithography [with] heavy initial expenses [that] will prevent this new method from becoming popular” (The Poster, 1900, p. 237). The innovation, however, enabled Wagner to achieve virtual photo-realism for the depiction of the "Color Expert," and that, plus the marvelous typography, awarded this poster a place in the collections of New York's MoMA.
