Star Wars. 1978.
"Star Wars" (the original, Episode IV, "A New Hope") was released in May 1977 and it was, of course, an instant blockbuster. The film's first run continued for more than a year, until July of 1978. It was out of theaters for a day. Then George Lucas re-released it – and this poster attended that 1978 re-release. This is the original studio release of the poster, designated "one-sheet style 'D'." It's reportedly one of George Lucas's favorite Star Wars posters; the original artwork hangs in his house. The poster-on-wall effect was clever problem-solving: the artists couldn't fit all the credits on the space they'd originally designed. "It remains a perennial favorite, even among studio executives," said Drew Struzan in an interview with Airbrush Magazine, Aug. 1999. The four small 'ink-blotches' at lower right are part of the design.
