Across the Trail. 1897.
It could be a scene out of The Revenant. Deep in the Rockies, as the snow cascades down, a prospector lies mortally wounded as his wife weeps over him, a nun prays, and within a ring of protecting fire, a Western scout, a pistol in each hand, shoots at the ravening wolves while an African-American and a Chinese immigrant scramble up a tree seeking safety – an absolute smorgasbord of Western wilderness nightmares in a single frame. "Come on, you varmints, come on!" The "gorgeous scenic, mechanical and natural production" of "Across the Trail" has been virtually lost to history. All we know is that it was on stage in Chicago, in 1897, and it was an apparent success.
