Hurtu. 1903.
An irresistible street scene of Belle Époque Paris, the Champs-Elysees thronging with colorful characters, like the trio of curbside dandies for example, and amicably competing modes of transport, from carriages and coaches to motor bikes and people on horseback, as well as those fortunate enough to possess Hurtu bicycles or automobiles. Within a blossoming Art Nouveau border, a female cyclist exchanges handkerchief greetings with her friend, in the passenger seat of a Hurtu auto – creating a fascinating commentary on female independence, friendship, gender roles, and their technological mediation in a rapidly changing society. Lorant-Heilbronn began his career as a posterist for various Paris theaters and movie halls. When films came along, he added duties as set designer and assistant director to his graphic responsibilities.
