"The black and the monkey form the first strange couple represented in advertising. At the beginning of the colonial era, advertising exercises the possibility of human miscegenation with this dubious association. The poster, 'The Curious Offspring of a Borneo Negress and a Representative of the Simian Species,' is the brainchild of the Brazilian master of caricature, Cândido de Faria, who came to Paris in 1882. Black and monkey put side by side in insets openly show their proximity. The clear eyes of the monkey and the folds of his face give him a manlike look while the black man smiles with a carnivorous red mouth" (Negripub, p. 180).
