Salon du Cycle et de l’Automobile. ca. 1898.
For a car and bicycle show at the Palais des Machines, a red-robed goddess of wheeled transport displays her two newest models. Her headdress is a winged wheel—the symbol of progress—while the structure of the Palais next to the recently built Eiffel Tower looks thoroughly modern when compared to the rest of Paris’s architecture. In between these structures, we receive a glimpse of greenery: the Champ de Mars, a large public greenspace, where some of the events were held.
