Nothing defines a circus better than a clown surrounded by admiring children, and this design captures the scene to perfection. It was first prepared in 1917 for the Ringling Brothers’ last season before their merger with Barnum (1918-1919), and re-printed in 1920 for the combined shows. It was always a great success in attracting attention to the circus, and has since become one of the most prized images of circus lore.
