Les Champions de l’Acatène. 1898.
The cream of the late-19th century competitive bicycling crop – Gaston Rivierre, Constant Huret and August Stephane – are raised as the patriotic standard of French peddling excellence in the name of Acatène, or "chainless." And though the accomplishments of all three champions are all impressive, it’s the central racer, Huret, who achieved the greatest notoriety (at least posterwise). Huret was immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec in his Chaine Simpson poster (see PAI-XXII, 35), seen there as the solo cyclist chasing the pacesetting tandem team before him.
