Salle Bullier / Fete du Nuit à Montparnasse Bal Costumé. 1922.
During the 1920s, dozens upon dozens of artists’ charity balls took place in Europe. All of them included a cross-section of bohemia and its patrons, even though ‘bohemia’ was beginning to become rather wealthy itself. The Fête du Nuit in 1922 at the Bullier dancehall was one of the more explosive and wild costume balls of the season, complete with a star-studded cast of both characters and events. Presented in the form of an alphabet, the attractions included clowns, dancing, gymnasts, Hindus, fools, jazz, swimming, tournaments, Zanzibar, sports, and, of course, whiskey. Meanwhile, some of the guests were so important as to also be listed: Cocteau, Delaunay, Gris, Léger, Man Ray, Picasso, Picabia, Stravinsky, and Tzara, to name just a few. Even the Polish painter Moïse Kisling is pointed out as being the head bartender for the evening. Overall, this was one of the more historic parties, fully encompassing the unmatched artistic culture of Montmartre during that magical time.
