Along with Gladiator, with which it merged financially in 1896, Clément was one of the bicycle makers that accounted for more posters than any other. In a genre full of fanciful imagery and exotically costumed muses, here is a straightforward narrative scene: as other soldiers fuss with stubborn horses in the background, this fellow chooses a reliable Clément bicycle to head off to duty. The tip-on is for a Rochefort-based distributor.
